Bespoke, Made-to-Measure, or Off-the-Peg: What is the Difference?
Was ist Made-to-measure?
Was ist Konfektion?

- Anna K. Milojevic Keller nimmt alle Masse selbst.

An off-the-peg suit is sewn in standard sizes and hangs ready in the shop. With made-to-measure, an existing block pattern is adapted to your measurements. A bespoke suit is cut for you alone, crafted by hand, and perfected over several fittings. At Lawrence Fashion, the bespoke tailor at Löwenplatz in Zurich, a bespoke suit usually requires 4 to 5 fittings and takes 4 to 5 weeks to complete.
What is a bespoke suit?
A bespoke suit is cut and sewn for a single individual. The foundation is a unique pattern made from sturdy paper and card, created exclusively for you and adjusted after each fitting.
We offer two types of bespoke suit. The fully bespoke garment is created from the ground up according to your wishes, from the cut to the final detail. Our business bespoke wear is the bespoke suit for professional life: it fits perfectly while allowing freedom of movement, so you can focus entirely on your work.
We keep your pattern and measurement sheet on file. When you return for your next suit, we build upon it. Some of our clients have been returning to us regularly since our foundation in 2001.
What is made-to-measure?
Made-to-measure starts with a pre-existing block pattern in a standard size. This is then adjusted to your key measurements, such as sleeve length, waist, and trouser length. You choose the fabric, lining, buttons and some details from a curated selection.
The suit is usually sewn in a factory. The result fits better than an off-the-peg suit. However, the underlying pattern remains a standard one, designed to fit many different body shapes.
What is ready-to-wear?
Ready-to-wear refers to clothing in standard sizes, fully sewn and available to purchase and take home immediately. The cut is based on a sizing chart that corresponds to an average figure.
Anyone who is between sizes, or has long arms or broad shoulders, will notice this first in the sleeves, shoulders and waistband. Sleeves and trousers can be shortened. However, the shoulders of a ready-made jacket are almost impossible to alter.
How do the three differ?
Bespoke Suit (Fully Bespoke or Business Bespoke)

- How the pattern is created: a personal pattern is made exclusively for you and refined after each fitting

- When to choose this option: when you need a suit to fit perfectly, for business, for a wedding or celebration, or if standard sizes never fit you properly

How is a bespoke suit created at Lawrence Fashion?
- The initial consultation lasts about an hour. We discuss the purpose of the suit, the cut you have in mind, and what you like or find lacking in your current suits.
- We select the fabrics together from samples and swatch books. You can see and feel the cloth before it is cut.
- Anna K. Milojevic Keller takes all measurements herself. They are recorded on your personal measurement sheet.
- From these measurements, the first draft of your pattern is created. The cloth is then cut by hand.
- Anna is present at every fitting, together with the tailor who is sewing your suit. The pattern is adjusted after each fitting. This process typically requires 4 to 5 fittings.
- The suit is finished by hand in our atelier. From the first consultation to the final collection, the process usually takes 4 to 5 weeks, depending on the garment.
Why does a bespoke suit require multiple fittings?
Each fitting reveals things that measurements alone cannot: how the cloth drapes, how the shoulders sit as you move, and how the trousers fit when you are seated. At the first fitting, we check that the initial draft is developing in the direction you envisioned. In subsequent fittings, we make progressively finer adjustments until the suit hangs perfectly, free of wrinkles.
Are bespoke suits also available for women?
Yes. In the same atelier, we create bespoke trouser suits for women, as well as couture pieces, bespoke blouses, and professional business wear. The process is the same: a unique pattern, collaborative cloth selection, and fittings until the suit is perfect.
What can I choose for a bespoke shirt?
The fabric, collar style, buttons, cuffs, and monogram. Together, we design your shirt as a one-of-a-kind piece. Clients who already have a bespoke suit from us can have their shirt tailored to complement it.
How far in advance should I order a wedding suit?
The suit itself generally takes 4 to 5 weeks to create. You should also allow extra time for fittings and choosing accessories. We recommend coming for your initial consultation approximately three months before the wedding. Upon request, we can also provide you with a cummerbund, plastron, tie, pocket square, and cufflinks.
